Treasured Engagement Gift Keepsake On The Cheap

Gift giving doesn’t have to break the bank, even for the really special and milestone occasions. In this blog I will show you how I re-created an engagement present I received many years ago, for under five dollars.

I’d just like to spend a moment talking about my thoughts on handmade gifts. My own personal thoughts on handmade gifts are that they show that you have spent time thinking about the intended recipient, spent time thinking about their personality, about their needs, their wants, and that you have invested time and effort into creating something unique that is a statement showing how well you know them and how much time you are willing to invest in them as a person.

As mentioned above, the following Engagement gift is a re-creation of a gift I received many years ago in my early 20s when I got engaged. It was given to me and my fiancé at the time, from a couple that were on a low income. The wife put together the present by hand, and it was a treasured keepsake that had pride of place on our buffet until we parted ways some time later. It was a simple, yet elegant and thoughtful gift, and I appreciated it greatly. I wish I knew where it was to show you a picture of it but you know what it’s like when you have moved several times over the years and things get misplaced, and of course it was not something my current husband would really appreciate on display for obvious reasons.

So here is a picture of the finished product…

So what do you think? Not to shabby? You wouldn’t mind giving or receiving this gift, right?

If the answer is yes, read on for these simple instructions…

I found these matching glasses in the Op Shop for 50c each…

I cleaned them up and added some bling… I purchased some gift ribbon from a discount store for two dollars and also some silver star embellishments (also two dollars). I used stickers that I had hiding amongst my scrapbooking stash, although you can usually find sheets of stickers from discount stores for around two dollars.

Because I only used a small amount of the ribbon & embellishments, I have plenty left over for other projects. So even though they cost me two dollars each, I only used a fraction of that so really only a few cents worth, bringing the total of the entire gift to under five dollars.

So there you have it! An inexpensive, easy to make gift, that won’t break the bank or use up too much of your time to make. And one I’m certain someone special would appreciate, I know I did.
